- Retreat to your childhood. Make a list of all the things you thought you wanted to be when you were younger and why. List everything even if it was a circus clown. I remember many times that I wanted to be a veterinarian because of the love I had for animals. I wanted to find out everything about animals. There were also times that I wanted to be a builder because I loved creating things. I build a shack for my guinea pigs. I was told I made a toy when I was four and called it the up and down toy. Another, I am not sure if I ever thought about being this but I loved cooking, I loved creating special things to eat like a pickle and mustard sandwich. Most creatively I thought of being a seamstress because I could sew anything and create anything. I also was told I should be a hairstylist because I would style hair so well.
- Describe in your own words what you think a "calling or life purpose" means. Write if you think it's always related to a career or something else.
- Make a "top 10" list of people who you admire (famous or not) and how their work inspires you.
- Write about what you do for a living now. Create a pro and con list of your work. Then ask your current boss or supervisor to write a list of your strongest qualities and areas that need improvement.
- Make a list of the top 3 professions you would love to have. Then describe why you love them and what skills you have that would make you perfect for that job. Also, describe how that work would make you feel like you have fulfilled your purpose.
- If you could interview someone from any profession, which profession would it be, and what are a few of the questions you'd like to ask them?
- Ask 3 people that know you; it can be friends, family, or co-workers and ask them what they think you're good at or what they think your calling might be. Journal the questions you ask and their answer here.
- Write a letter to yourself 5 years from now describing where you want to be.
- What is a reoccurring dream or aspiration for your life? Write about how it makes you feel.
- Ir you could volunteer as an intern for a day in a field that touches your heart, would you? What field would you intern and why did you choose that field?
Dr. Caroline Leaf is a cognitive neuroscientist who wrote one of my favorite books Switch on Your Mind. She connects our brain to our God. Our mind is a powerful thing.
