Manifesto

My name is Catherine Silvas, and I am a Middle School English Language Teacher. I was raised in the neighborhood that I work in and graduated from the Middle School that I teach. My mother still lives in the community, the neighborhood is known as barrio centro, like being in the center of Tucson. It is a low income neighborhood. My focus is teaching grammar to English learners that need four hours of language arts. I am choosing the educational pathway as my career because I believe in leading students into who they are created to be. My goal is to inspire them and build them into great student so they can go onto being the not just students but the person for our community.

The Teacher. As a teacher, these are the skills I need to manifest. The role of a teacher is not just to teach the students the specific discipline but to inspire them when they are down, to counsel them when they need direction, to coach them when they need a cheerleader, and to discipline when they need to be corrected. I am their second parent. I teach students that have various personalities and learn in different ways. I steadily build a teacher toolbox of multiple techniques I have learned over the years as being a substitute teacher and now a teacher. As I complete my coursework to become a certified teacher, I am learning various techniques, building knowledge of understanding lesson plan design, and researching philosophies of education. The teacher needs to be able to facilitate learning at any level. The teacher should be able to differentiate her lesson as difficulties arise. The teacher will learn how to complete formative assessments and summative assessments. My value as a teacher will grow as my years and willingness to be molded into a great teacher grows.

The Classroom. A great classroom environment will need to have that ambiance of learning with a mixture of creativity and inspirational ideas so that the student can connect and be inspired to learn. The student should be able to walk in and be inspired to learn. There will be various assignments so the students needs supplies to help them complete their assignments. For instance, if I am teaching grammar the materials I need to provide to the students are scissors, tape, craft paper, and coloring pencils because the students will be producing lots of hands-on activities to help them understand the syntax of English. There also has to be classroom rules to set the classroom management for optimal learning. The instruction should be differentiated to teach every need of the students. Student and parent communication should be facilitated smoothly especially if there is a discipline or academic need to address.

The Need For Growth. Grammar is the most important topic to learn the English language. The students need to know what tense they are talking in to be able to communicate appropriately. They need to know how to conjugate verbs and understand the verb tense studies, the syntax rules, and constructing a sentence appropriately. In order for me to teach grammar, I need to build continue growth by attending professional development classes to help me be a great teacher. Creating a theme for my room, connecting the idea to learning, and having lots of creativity from skits, to arts and crafts, to projects that provide the students to have the understanding of learning grammar. As I think about redefining my discipline, I think about working out. To be fit I need to work out, and sometimes that means even when I am tired. Working out relates to redefining my discipline by always working to become the better teacher, observing other teachers, and asking many questions.

The School Year at a Glance. I see that every year I need to connect more volunteers in tutoring students right in my classroom so that they can coach them in learning how to spell, writing better in the lines, or being able to write that academic book report. I feel art can be another project to connect to the classroom. Art can be that link to their story, whether it is spoken word, skits, or poetry this will be the outlet that students need to empower themselves. We can also have a performance at the end of school to allow the students to share their story with our community. Lastly, I would like to have a culture fair every October, the end of the first quarter, that will help the students research a favorite country and have a display table sharing their findings.

Conclusion. In closing, to be the best teacher my students need is focusing on 212 degrees. Two hundred twelve degrees means going beyond that boiling point to help my students, help myself, help the staff, and help the parents. When I can go that extra mile my classroom will be that catapult for learning. My desire for growth will become more comfortable and more natural as I build my skills as a teacher. Finally, my year will be paved for a smooth expression of the students.

Tips for Empowering Your Life

Dr. Caroline Leaf is a cognitive neuroscientist who wrote one of my favorite books Switch on Your Mind. She connects our brain to our God. Our mind is a powerful thing. If we feed it pure thoughts the likelihood of it producing pure thoughts are much higher than if we don't care what we put into our mind. Well as I was thinking about this amazing muscle we have that guides us in so many ways; I wanted to connect for us with the way to deal with our emotions during this Pandemic as we are in right now with a prayer. Before I give you the prayer verse I want to give you a brief background of the author of this book. Paul is his name and he was not one of Jesus' disciples, but yet spread the word about Jesus. He was a martyr and on his way to kill Christians when his life changed forever. He wrote this book from his prison cell to the Philippians. "He had gracious affection and appreciation for the church of Philippi and wanted to empower them even though he was caught in a ...

If These Walls Could Talk

Stories Behind the Art. Voices Behind the Vision. Pull Up A Chair What stories would these walls tell?   Would they whisper about the artist who almost gave up before picking up the brush one last time?   Would they remember the child who walked through the gallery doors believing they weren't creative—and left inspired to paint?   Would they tell of friendships formed during exhibitions, quiet conversations that changed perspectives, or the healing that happens when someone finally sees themselves reflected in a work of art?   Every wall has witnessed something beautiful.   Welcome to If These Walls Could Talk: Stories Behind the Art, where we uncover the people, the purpose, and the moments that make De La Vega Art Gallery more than a place to view art—it is a place where stories come to life. What These Walls Will Share 🎨 Meet the Artist Every artist carries more than paint and canvas. They carry memories, dreams, culture, faith, and purpose. Meet the...

Destination Journey

Retreat to your childhood. Make a list of all the things you thought you wanted to be when you were younger and why. List everything even if it was a circus clown. I remember many times that I wanted to be a veterinarian because of the love I had for animals. I wanted to find out everything about animals. There were also times that I wanted to be a builder because I loved creating things. I build a shack for my guinea pigs. I was told I made a toy when I was four and called it the up and down toy. Another, I am not sure if I ever thought about being this but I loved cooking, I loved creating special things to eat like a pickle and mustard sandwich. Most creatively I thought of being a seamstress because I could sew anything and create anything. I also was told I should be a hairstylist because I would style hair so well.  Describe in your own words what you think a "calling or life purpose" means. Write if you think it's always related to a career or something else. Make...
